here’s to you, athens!

heather & matt’s slideshow is up! this is one of my favorite engagement shoots ever; their love is so evident! i think i smiled the whole time i was editing these…i’m a sucker.

athens is the home of many beginings for us. it was there that…

…matt got his first camera. he captured athens from the tops of radio towers and campus buildings. anything dangerous and beautiful. he also became the designated photographer for every ad or design project the grady school of journalism could throw his way. his favorite professor, kirsten strausbaugh, even told him that if he got tired of advertising that he should consider photography.

…we met. i was a freshman, he was a senior. i was no doubt obnoxiously sarcastic, he was forgiving. we were friends without expectation of anything more. neither of us were looking for anything else.

…we dated. i still believe i was 100% tricked into our first date. clueless until the very end. let’s just say matt might be too smooth.

…i took photo. deep in the basement of the old art building on north campus i learned to love the musty, vinegary smells of the dark room. my fingers were yellow for days and i spent hours tweaking my images and absorbing the silence. i was hooked on making beautiful images.

…we were married. that was our introduction to the wedding industry. we became familiar with wedding photography and chatted casually about giving that a shot one day…

…we shot our first wedding. it was for a friend who couldn’t find a photographer and asked if i knew of anyone. my response- um, us? after that wedding we spent a few hours with some close friends at the grill downtown, slowly coming to the realization that we wanted to really persue this.

that wedding was a year ago this sunday. woah. we launched the site in january and shot our first wedding as altmix photography on march 22- we closed off booking for ’08 when we hit 30 weddings. we’ve come so far and learned so much. this weekend we’re headed back to ‘ole athens to celebrate. it’s one of our rare off-weekends and even though we’re ticket-less for the game ($600 for 2 tickets!? you’re joking.) we’re excited to enjoy our old stomping grounds, see old friends, maybe run into a few like-minded clients, and tailgate our little hearts out! athens puts things in perspective for us- cannot wait!

melissa & josh are married!

i have to tell you, since melissa booked with us i’ve had an extra special place in my heart for her wedding.  not only have i known her since freshman year at georgia (we lived on the same hall!) but we will forever share some very similar memories of our weddings.  matt and i were thrown back in time when we stepped into watkinsville first baptist church on saturday for melissa and josh’s wedding.  memories of our own wedding preparations in those very rooms are still so fresh and yet we’re coming up on a year, woah!  shadowing melissa and her awesome friends was a blast but not totally void of little emotional flashes when it almost seemed like watching my own wedding happen before my eyes.  one of my favorite parts of the day was josh and melissa sharing a private moment before the ceremony and taking time for a bunch of rockin’ couple photos.  can’t wait to share those with you!  …but i’m getting ahead of myself, first the bridal luncheon at maison bleu, great environment, great friends, great food:

then it was time to get ready.  melissa is such a natural beauty it seemed like in no time at all she had put on her makeup and thrown up her hair into an fabulous bridal ‘do, some people just amaze me!

once she looked perfectly amazing it was time for their moment together in the church.  they were so sweet and cuddly, but as you’ll see, they totally know how to throw it into high fashion mode!  what a great  couple! :)

then it was time to wait, josh was totally cool and ready:

time for the party to start!  their reception was held at the athens country club and it was our first trip there, they really do a great job!

i love the couple in the foreground watching the newlyweds, such a sweet moment:

last but not least, the quite adorable flowergirl and our competition for the evening.  we really loved that little one so much!

melissa and josh, you are one of the sweetest and most gentle couples we’ve met.  the way you two treat one another says so much about what an amazing life you have ahead of you together.  thank you for including us in such a special day!

what’s new?

let grant and lucy blow you away! check out their new gallery on the website!

it’s been really exciting for us to shoot engagement sessions the last five weeks in a row! getting to know our couples is top priority for us and we’ve certainly been blessed to do so much of that lately! it has been thrilling to watch our little business grow; every time we’ve received a contract from one of you we’ve done a little dance in your honor (so thank you! ;)). just last night matt and i were musing

what if this time last year we’d known this is where we’d be today? would we have believed it?

i’m not sure i would have! thank you all -clients, family, friends- for being so encouraging, loving, and understanding. our ’08 calendar is filling up fast and we have your incredible word.of.mouth advertising to thank! you all are the best!

lucy & grant are engaged!

what a beautiful saturday we had in athens! the weather was unbelievably perfect, the company was outstanding, and the mood was playful. after grabbing some lunch with our close friends and fellow photographers, andrew and jaynah morgan, we headed to the 40 watt to meet grant and lucy. they arrived full of energy and we were off to explore their beloved city! lucy and grant cracked each other (and us!) up all afternoon, dancing, whispering, and goofing off. here are a few of our favorite pictures from the day:

so remember how nervous i was about meeting up with fellow photographers dan and anne almasy? well, i had no reason to be at all! fyi, i did take a few notes but i think i was kinda cool about it – maybe? either way, we had an awesome afternoon with them and though we mostly talked photography, albums, and equipment, we definitely made some new friends in the process. thanks so much guys! for fun, here is a pic that anne took at the end of our visit; as a photographer it’s surprisingly weird to be on the other side of the lens!
