our new plant(life)!

i’m sitting here at my desk (which is the couch), listening to hail bounce around on the front porch. my view from the window immediately to my right is mostly obscured by our huge puppy who insists on fitting into the tight space to spy on our new neighbor’s dog. but i know that eventually she’ll realize that she is stuck and spastically jump backwards to free herself, knocking over everything in her path. i, equally spastically, will grab for my coffee and computer allowing sharpies, stickies and notebooks to land wherever her tail takes them. but then she’ll curl up and fall asleep and the enjoyable calm will return. anyway, the grey skies and bouncy hail- while they relax me they also make me dream of spring. on days like today i always get the urge to work outside and instead find myself drawing out plans and making lists of what i will do the minute the skies clear. it was on a day similar to this that matt & i bundled up and headed to lowes to start our garden.

after passionately explaining how fruitful our future garden will be and, once i calmed down, proving i had a plan (i don’t always, it was a fair question), matt agreed to a little building project: a seed starting station.

in case i haven’t mentioned it in a while- matt is so awesome at projects! since we don’t have a lot of space we decided to modify an existing piece of furniture and hang a fixture underneath it to provide light for our baby seedlings. we also ended up using cookie cooling racks to create a base for the plants to sit on- how awesome (-ly ghetto) is that!? look how dedicated matt is, working late into the night (or not, it gets dark at like 6:00 these days- ew! but that doesn’t take away from how super my husband is):

i potted up seeds while matt finished with the wiring (scary!) and before we knew it we had a legit little setup! but then, when the little guys started sprouting, we decided it looked like we were growing, um, weed, so i decided to be very clear with anyone who came through our door. except the cable guy- i left him wondering about us…both at home in the middle of the day…in our pajamas…seedlings in a dark corner of our dining room…bahahaa:

so i hope to keep you updated with good news regarding the garden but i’ll be sure to also let you know if the seed starting is a huge failure. for now i’m just so excited to watch the little guys grow and nibble the baby leaves as i thin the weaker plants out (…no waste, right?) and around mid march if i have something left to transplant that will be fantastic. :)

help us read!

i grew up a bookworm. i had to be called to dinner twice. i was repeatedly warned that my eyes were going to go bad as i sat curled up in a little ball in the back seat of our van holding up my nancy drew so i could read by the headlights of the car behind us…

matt also grew up with a love of reading. he dedicated long car rides to the adventures of the hardy boys- once he opened a book he was hooked…

so what happened to us? college? homework? jobs? whatever it was- we’ve realized it’s time to dive back into books. now, we’re not non readers currently- we can usually be found skimming internet articles, blogs, magazines and lots of business books but it’s just time we picked up some quality literature. i started yesterday with a little sophie kinsella- so maybe by ‘quality literature’ i just mean ‘quality entertainment’- really, we’re into either! ;) but we need your help! since you proved your superior taste with your netflix suggestions, we’d love to hear your book suggestions as well! last time our plea came with an offer- so this time we want to do that too- mostly because we just love…

…YOU! you are the reason that we blog and the fact that you take time to comment makes us want to continue to do so! this blog is how we’ve connected with so many amazing new friends so we want to offer a little something back! we’d love for you to drop a comment or you can shoot an email with your book ideas-and we will randomly draw a name to give you the gift of…audiobooks? -i’m trying to make this relate…- or music- or of tv shows or movies- or podcasts- basically a $25 itunes giftcard. ;) we’d LOVE to hear from you!

oh also:

WE LOVE THE EARTH!   …and apparently also playing tag?…

***EDIT!*** congratulations echupp- we’ll be sending you some itunes fun soon! thanks so much to everyone who left comments- i hope more than just matt & i were able to read the titles and get some new ideas! read on! ***EDIT OVER.***

back!

after four days with my family we’re back and ready to get our post on! …and because we’re overly motivated and ready to start, we’re going to go ahead and share a little gem from the wedding we’ll be posting later today. as comfortable as matt and i usually are communicating with one another, a photobooth apparently really changes things:

atlanta_photobooth

be on alert for a second post today! YES, a two post monday rocks, WHO KNOWS WHAT’S NEXT FOR US!?!

atlanta SNOW fun!

so in case you don’t follow us on twitter, it is SNOWING in ATLANTA today! and in case you can’t tell from that last sentence- this makes me VERY EXCITED!

when we walked out of church this morning i think i smiled bigger than i’ve smiled in weeks- it almost hurt- then proceeded to half hug/ half beat matt’s arm as i endlessly repeated, ‘it’s snowing, baby!’ as if he couldn’t tell by the ice-y whiteness weighing down his eyelashes and obscuring his vision. we met friends for pancakes and after a quick snowball fight (snow scraped off the hoods of cars in the parking lot, of course) we headed home to grab the camera. the flakes had gotten heavier and wetter (but had not quite turned to rain!) so we took turns juggling the umbrella as we shot everything in sight- including each other- that happened to be covered in snow. we didn’t have too much time before we were totally soaked through and it was time to enjoy the whiteness from our couch… ;)

here are a few from this rare snowy march day! first up: me realizing that my hat has a quarter inch of slushy snow on top of it:

my husband is just a stud :)

and here i am, extremities completely frozen, conjuring up the teeniest smile despite my drenched jeans (is there anything worse?!):

my ice covered hat! it (i) kept dropping ice chunks every time i tried to chimp a shot…oops… ;)006_atlanta_snow_030109

like i said- we spent the rest of the afternoon watching the snow from our couch- this is the view from there, it’s lovely:

what a glorious day!

smell.man!

if matt were a superhero he would be the one with the heightened olfactory- and since i googled that and didn’t find a name i’ll just say matt IS that superhero. talent? smelling. it is quite otherworldly how he smells- like a pregnant woman mixed with a drug dog and quite as unstoppable. surely we can figure out a way for this talent to save lives, right?

for now i just appreciate him suggesting i add more nutmeg to my alfredo FROM THE COUCH. it really is a gift and he’s never been wrong but it can be really incriminating. for example, if i slightly sear anything even the teeniest bit he’s on to me and running to cover the smoke alarm- yea we do that, don’t tell our landlord please. but i wouldn’t trade his abilities for the world as it comes in so handy when i’m unsure about the lunch meat or the milk from last week. in these cases, he’s clutch.

it does, however, ruin surprises. breakfast in bed? nope! the smell of coffee or apple turnovers will literally JOLT matt from his rem cycle. mind-blowing. for the most part i appreciate it but i didn’t write this post to blabber…

really, i just wanted everyone to know i am married to a superhero, that’s all!

mattchristmas

* over christmas my aunts wanted to take an extended family shot and matt took it upon himself to set up the camera- the resulting test images totally cracked me up!
